Tessa's idea for a job to take at the end of the novel symbolizes her growth. She had a job at the beginning of the narrative that she thought made a difference by working on the inside. She sees what it really means to make a difference by working on the inside when she becomes an informer. After this, she wants to take an active role in life. The job she chooses is active. She can become a leader with responsibility for lives just as she had when she was an informer.
