The language the author uses to craft the North Woods narrative is complex and layered, mutable and intricate. Because the novel spans three centuries in time, the syntax and diction Mason employs throughout must evolve. Mason uses his linguistic evolutions as a way to enact the passage of time, and the effects time has on people and places.
