A motif of the book is the relationship between Miss Beryl, Clive Jr., and Sully. Miss Beryl and her son, Clive Jr., do not trust one another. As a banker he is always giving her financial advice that she ignores. He wants her to evict Sully and she will not. He wants her to rely on him but she will not because she does not trust him. She relies on Sully to help her and to do things for her, which grates on Clive.
