Cornerstone is an example of a transitional housing program that works as an alternative to shelters for domestic violence victims. It is a transitional housing complex in Washington DC that was established and is run by the District Alliance for Safe Housing. Snyder visits Cornerstone to see an example of what traditional housing can look like for domestic violence victims. Cornerstone is subsidized housing that includes forty-three units, a fitness room, and a communal playroom for children. Cornerstone is different from shelters because it offers autonomous and private living situations for victims and their families. It is described as "not beautiful" but as having hardwood floors with newly renovated efficiency kitchens and large windows overlooking the neighborhood" (230).
