Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus was a Roman farmer in the fifth century BC. He was appointed dictator of Rome to defend the city against attack. After the attack, when Rome’s enemies were vanquished, he gave up his power and returned to being a farmer. As a result, he has become a symbol of civic virtue to generations.
