Why is the lottery so popular with the proles? Is this a reflection of our society?

The Proles love the lottery. Besides porn, alcohol, babies.....the lottery occupies the minds of many Proles. It is doubtful that anybody actually wins the lottery, the rush of gambling is enough to distract the Proles from their miserable existence. I think the essence of this is similar to our times. The promise of quick money is intoxicating to many people today.
