Winston is scared of women, especially young attractive women. Girls are indoctrinated early in their lives to be suspicious of men. The Party knows that the sex instinct in men is especially hard to control. By indoctrinating women to be spies, they can catch men who have thoughts or feelings of unorthodoxy. Initially, Winston is terrified when a young woman like Julia shows interest in him.
