1984

What parallels can we do between 1984, Georges Orwell, and today on the subject of truth and falsehood?

It is interesting that 1984 is a best seller again....sixty four years after it was published. Truth in 1984 was malleable. The party erased history and made new history. They changed facts and memories to suit whatever "truth" they wished to convey at a given moment. Oceania was at war with Eastasia but in another day Oceania was never at war with Eastasia. The outer party members swallowed Party lies and propaganda and, as far as we know, believed every word. The Proles simply did not matter. They were too busy with their lottery, their alcohol; their pornography to care. We are today eerily in a post-truth culture; at least in the United States. The truth is malleable depending on who says it and what the people choose to believe. This is both alarming and ironic considering how Orwell's masterpiece is once again a best seller.
