O'Brien loves Winston for his intellect yet wants to destroy it. In book 3 Winston is often holding the man, O'Brien, for life and comfort even though this same man is controlling the torture. Ironically Winston loves O'Brien for his intellect as well. Both men see each other as special yet are both involved with the worst torture and manipulation. For much of Part 3, the two men debate each othrer's logic. The more Winston resists, the more Obrien loves him and tortures him.
