In the end, Winston's experiences leave him a shell of his former self. He has given in, he lives a complacent life, and he also comes to live a life without hope. Winston accepts the job he has been provided, his emotional attachment to Julia had ended in betrayal (on both sides), and Winston comes to love Big Brother more than he loves himself.
