Kiara describes downtown Oakland in contrast to East Oakland as she walks through the city searching for jobs at the beginning of the novel, explaining, "Everything is big here, not like back home in East, where we keep our buildings low to the ground...In downtown, it feels like everything is airborne or underground" (34).
