Why does Amadeo wish to be nailed to the cross in the short story, The Five Wounds?

For Amadeo, being nailed to the cross is a symbol of prestige. He wants to be the best Jesus his town has ever seen, and to garner their approval it is necessary for him to ask to be nailed. Otherwise, he will never be seen as worthy of playing the role.
