The Village of Westhampton is a metaphor for domestic prison. The Village of Westhampton is a wealthy neighborhood on Long Island where Jill Winslow lives with her investment-banker husband Mark Winslow. The Village of Westhampton is a gated community with its own "police" force, and it contrasts greatly with the small apartment that Kate and John share in Manhattan. Although the Village of Westhampton is beautiful, John learns that Jill views her privileged, country club life as a prison and that she is living in an unhappy marriage.
