The Night Circus is divided into five parts. Part One, Primordium, focuses on the two illusionists lives before their competition begins. It establishes the characters of Marco and Celia independent from each other. This section highlights the two schools of magic that will be competing throughout the novel and depicts the conception of the circus as the venue for their dual. It ends before the circus' opening night, a new chapter in all the character's lives. Part Two, Illumination, describes life in the circus. It focuses primarily on Marco and Celia's battle and their struggle to understand the rules of their competition.
