What was the purpose of sending the men to the right, women to the left, and then further selection by Dr. Mengele?

This separation allowed Mengele to separate families..... men from women, then children over 15 from the women. The mothers and small children were immediately killed, as the Nazis were only interested in healthy people of working age.
