Night...or the absense of light....is a powerful symbol that runs throughout the novel. It symbolizes death, loss of faith, and the darkness of the human soul. Corposes, fires...all of these represent death, literally, and figureatively as the survivors have to struggle and reconcile themselves to a god that does not seem to hear them and allows them to suffer.
