Neuromancer is set in a future Earth where orbital casinos, routine space flight and high technology are commonplace. Crime of all sorts is common and well organized. Urbanization has altered large areas of the earth in extreme ways. For example, the eastern North America is referred to as the Sprawl, or BAMA - the Boston-Atlanta-Metropolitan-Axis.
