Frederick Douglass was a slave. Few slave masters educated the children of their slaves, it was considered dangerous, something Douglass learned at the hands of the Aulds. Thankfully, Mrs. Auld encouraged Frederick's desire to attain knowledge before completely cutting him off at her husband's insistance.
