Jessica notices strange things about her husband almost immediately. The reader, however, already knows about his immortality. We can see that her questions are legitimate, and we can also see her confusion.... almost a kind of mistrust. In essence, it is David's secret that wreaks havoc on his marriage. Jessica might never have married him had she known, but as readers, we know that their marriage will likely not be able to survive the secrets and suspicion.
