In the Poem, My Papa's Waltz, the emotional atmosphere given to the work is called 'tone'. There are two contraticting camps regarding the tone of this poem. When you read it one way, the father comes home from work, drunk, then clumsily attempts to dance with his son. The other interpretation is that the father comes home drunk, and becomes abusive toward his son.
