Another theme in this story is passion. This novel discusses passion in several different ways. Laura is a thirty-one year old woman when she meets and marries Henry, old enough to have settled into a life without passion. Therefore when Laura marries Henry, she finds herself moving into a world she had never understood before, one that is completely new to her. Henry is not an overly passionate man, but Laura finds him satisfactory.
