What does Brady use the "Thing Two" for in the novel, Mr. Mercedes?

Brady made the Thing Two to enable him to capture the unlock codes for cars with keyless remote entries. He uses it to unlock Olivia’s car so that he can steal it, and then later uses it again when he unlocks Brady’s car to put the explosives inside.
