In July's mother's eyes, July has especially proceeded poorly not only because of her pregnancy, but because her husband is from a lower class. Mrs. Greher repeatedly tried to get July interested in Princeton-bound Horace Clark instead. Class distinctions are fairly constant throughout the novel and provide an additional layer to setting.
