Why does Peter break off his engagement to Lavinia in the play, Mourning Becomes Electra?

When Lavinia shocks Peter by suggesting that they have sex prior to marriage, he agrees. In an emotional fit of passion, however, she cries out to him not his name, but that her mother's lover, Adam Brant. Horrified, Peter ends their engagement.
