The ocean serves as a metaphor for the sky. Its whiteness, however, suggests a sight drained of its usual hue and vigor. By the end of the stanza, the ocean/sky has become a reminder of the "antiseptic other side of death." The whiteness of the image becomes associated with nonexistence and a medicinally clean blankness.
