Guilt is another theme in the story. Jinx has been told by his uncle that people around him have a habit of dying. Jinx has seen this first hand when his mother dies of some unnamed illness. Later, when a man who threatened his Uncle Finn dies at what Jinx believes is his own hand, the idea that he is a jinx is reinforced. However, Jinx moves on and settles in Manifest, making friends and coming to believe that he can really be a part of a community. This changes, however, when Ned dies. Jinx believes that Ned's death is his fault because he helped him earn the money that he used to bribe the military recruiter into allowing him to join before his eighteenth birthday.
