In the first chapter, when Frank comes to treat Maria, she immediately starts screaming for help upon seeing him. The only person who reacted was Gail, who rushed to help Marie. Meanwhile, Wesley remained emotionless, not caring what happened to Marie. This scene foreshadows the break that will later take place in the family.
