One example of the theme appearances versus reality can be found in the character of Graham. After his divorce from Frieda, Graham alters his manner of dressing, buying an entirely new and expensive wardrobe. His revised attire symbolizes disguise.... a desperate attempt to detach from his old self, and his inability to be faithful or satisfied with anything or anyone. Graham hopes that dressing like the man he wants to be will make him the man he wants to be.
