Banneker is a symbol of Claudia’s belief that her and Monday’s friendship will return to the way they had planned in the near future. Claudia is determined to go to Banneker, a very competitive high school, even though she struggles academically, for the sole reason that Monday wants to go there. By continuing to commit to this promise, she is convincing herself that Monday will come back for high school.
