The unidentifiable object that Molloy steals from Lousse's house symbolizes the incomprehensibility of the meaning of life. Molloy is so taken by the object, and appreciates the fact that he can "puzzle over it endlessly without risk" (58), which mirrors the way Molloy ruminates on life and death.
