Moll Flanders is not an autobiography. In order to attract readers and address otherwise unacceptable topics, Dafoe used the premise of this new genre when writing the novel. Telling Moll's story in this fashion served to make the subject matter somewhat more acceptable and opened endless possibilities to truly analyze Moll's character.
