What happened to Mr. Mundic during WWII in the novel, Miss Benson’s Beetle?

During WWII, Mundic was taken prisoner by the Japanese and held as a prisoner of war. Mundic now suffers from PTSD and is described by the narrator on the following way; “He was a casualty of war, and Margery had no idea how to help” (22).
