Language plays a role both figuratively and literally. For the Yoos, the Korean language is one of intimacy, love and truth. Terms of endearment are often expressed in Korean, and when the Yoos call one another by Korean endearments, the words have more impact. Whether it be "Um-ma" for mom, "Yuh-bo" for spouse, or "Meh-hee-yah" Mary's given Korean name, the terms symbolize intimacy. Additionally, language symbolize power. Both Young and Pak feel more powerful when they speak Korean. Also, the lack of language, and honest articulation, symbolizes fear. As many of the characters fear rejection, they refuse to speak their truth.
