In Act I, Scene III, Joe's nickname for Harper, "Buddy," is significant. Joe and Harper do not have a real marriage. Just as Harper lives in a fantasy world, her marriage is a fantasy. They are not lovers. They are "buddies." Their kisses are "Buddy kisses." This foreshadows the revelation that Joe is gay. The name "Mr. Lies" is also significant, since Harper's marriage is based on a massive lie: Joe pretending he's not gay.
