Meyer uses allusions to artists and musicians, both to establish Bella as an old soul and to explore Carlisle's history as a vampire. References to the fine arts also establish the Cullen clan as more cultured and humane than their vampire counterparts. Carlisle is said to have a painting by Italian artist, Francesco Solimena, who was known for his mythical renderings of all sorts of beings, some presumed immortal, often amidst chaos. This painting also indicates Carlisle's extended vampiric lifespan of over 300 years. Language associated with the myth of Persephone, such as the pomegranate seeds and the underworld, are peppered throughout the work to parallel the myth with Edward and Bella's plight. This metaphor colors Edward's relationship with Bella.
