What metaphors are used in Middle Passage by Charles Johnson?

Johnson names one of the ships is "The Republic," an illusion to Plato's, The Republic, in which Plato metaphorically uses a group of people to represent the soul. Naming the ship "The Republic" is saying that the ship will come to represent a single human soul coming to enlightenment.
