How does the author use foreshadowing in Middle Passage?

Rutherford's diary entry on July 3, 1830, makes special note of the way the Allmuseri have changed after having been exposed to a new way of life aboard the ship. These changes foreshadow the bloody uprising, which is completely out of character for the hitherto peaceful tribe.
