At the center of the playing space, there is a pool of water - not too deep to stand in, but deep enough that it makes a difference to how the actors move. The pool serves to represent several different bodies of water in the play, everything from a pond (Prologue) to the ocean (Alcyone and Ceyx) to a swimming pool (Phaeton). It also serves as a metaphoric representation of obstacles encountered by characters (Eros and Psyche). Most importantly, in all the ways it is entered and/or made use of throughout the play, it functions as a thematically central symbol of the nature, power, and value of love.
