Cadmus was sent to a new city under the orders of Apollo. There, his men were killed by a giant snake. Cadmus sowed the teeth of the snake into the land and the teeth grew into men who slaughtered each other. Five men survived the fight, and these men would later grow to become the five aristocratic families of Thebe.
