Who are "Pre-Christians" as noted in Lewis', Mere Christianity?

Lewis notes that some humans might not have rebelled against God and could have started the evolutionary process early. Time has meaning only in the physical universe. God and all Its three parts are eternal, without beginning or end, something nearly impossible to imagine for three-dimensional beings trapped within time.
