The overall tone is informal and divided between dialogue and narrative. Because of the first-person perspective, there is more narration than dialogue. The reader is aware of Merci's inner thoughts and feelings, even when no one is talking. The conversations and Merci's thoughts are appropriate for the target audience. There are no curse words, violence, or sexual overtones. There is an undercurrent of hope that leads the reader to expect a positive ending.
