Mending Wall

What does 'bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top in each hand, like an old-stone savage armed,' means in the poem Mending Wall by Robert Frost?

I believe this refers to an image of ancient (primitive) man, preparing to wield a large stone, as a form of defense.
