Why does the editor refuse the narrator's resignation in the novel, Memories of My Melancholy Whores?

The editor of the newspaper calls the narrator into his office and refuses to accept his resignation, telling him that his column on the glories of old age is one of his best. The editor insists that the narrator keep writing the column and the narrator agrees.
