Why does Mike return to Japan in the novel, Memorial?

After Eiju is diagnosed with terminal cancer, Mike realizes that there is a very limited time left before his estranged father dies. Mike decides to go to Japan to spend the remaining weeks or months of Eiju’s life with him.
