Naomi Porter is a Russian orphan that was adopted by U.S. parents when she was just a few weeks old. Ironically, Naomi was left on the doorsteps of the orphanage inside of a typewriter case and the parents who adopt her are a writer and photographer that write a series of wine travel books.

Naomi is now a junior in high school. She is the co-editor of the school yearbook, The Phoenix. While going back into the school one day to retrieve the camera she forgot, Naomi slips, falls down the stairs and hits her head. She is rushed to the hospital and is now suffering amnesia, where she only remembers her life up until the sixth grade. In other words, she cannot remember the last four years of her life.
