Doctors are boring, self-centered, obsessive: the novel's first line is: "For a long time Molly Bonner's strongest reaction to doctors was a fear that they would bore her to death." The lack intuition, imagination, and empathy. Molly says, "They don't put things together, Doctors don't. Don't see a whole picture. I think that's what sometimes gets them into trouble."
