Throughout the novel, Sydney and Ridge communicate via text to make it easier for him due to his deafness and Sydney's inability to use sign language. On the rare occasions that Ridge vocalizes to Sydney, he is in his most desperate state to express himself. Thus, vocalizing represents desperation and a desire to be understood.
