Self-awareness symbolizes a lack of desire for self-improvement in the novel. Throughout the novel, all of the characters are searching for themselves but without the hope of changing who they are. Sydney knows she has lost herself in the context of her relationship with Hunter and her estrangement from her family, but she does not confront the effects of these issues in a meaningful way.
