Initially, Maya has no intention of remaining in Ghana. Her visit was meant to be short.... the coming of age story in which a parent hope to safely turn over their children to a university. When Guy is hospitalized as a result of the accident, Maya loses her bearings and remains in Ghana. Ghana is not home for Maya.... at least not yet. While there she, however, she comes to understand what it is like to live in a country without discrimination, a place where cultural heritage is strong, and she embraces this place in which she feels a sense of unconditional love.
