Vladek is not an easy man to live with. He is a miser and usually in a bad mood. He is stubborn and often emotionally abusive to Mala. I think Auschwitz certainly shaped Vladek. He learned to be stubborn as well as keep anything he could get in order to survive. His emotional abuse of Mala and his relationship with his son can only partly be explained by Vladek's war experience. Vladek must take responsibility for how he behaves after the war. Not all survivors turned out as crotchety as Vladek.
